Work That Flows

I haven't read a newspaper in years. But today I'm sitting at one of my favorite little ocean front cafes The Deck on the little island off of Bali where I live.

Came here for

1) delicious "Skillet Eggs"

2) reliable wifi for uploading a new video for my online course

3) view of four surf spots so when the waves look fun I can be out there in 10 minutes.

There's a newspaper rack beside me with an International New York Times. From yesterday, which is surprisingly fresh considering our location! I put it on my table, thinking that my Dad would be proud of me, and skim the front page.

There's a blurb about an online article entitled "The Incalculable Value of Finding a Job You Love", and you know I'm all about THAT, so I checked it out.

Here's my favorite quote from the article:

"The happiness literature has identified one of the most deeply satisfying human psychological states to be one called 'flow'. It occurs when you are so immersed in an activity that you lose track of the passage of time. If you can land a job that enables you to experience substantial periods of flow, you will be among the most fortunate people on the planet. What’s more, as the years pass, you will almost surely develop deep expertise at whatever it is you’ve been doing. At that point, even if few people in any one location place high value on what you do, you may find that your services become extremely valuable economically."

Good stuff and I totally agree. I dream of a day when this is common knowledge and articles like this -- and my VisionQuest process -- are obsolete.

To your most fulfilling dreams,

Rick Cowley
